NAWIC Block Kids Set for Feb. 7
Elementary students will have the opportunity to learn about opportunities in the construction industry while showcasing their creativity at the Block Kids program sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction – St. Louis Chapter (NAWIC).
The Block Kids program will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Green Park Lutheran School located at 4248 Green Park Road in St. Louis, Missouri. The program starts at 9:00 a.m.
The Block Kids program is designed to bolster the interest and knowledge by grade school children about the numerous opportunities in the construction industry, while stimulating their desire to pursue construction as a career choice. NAWIC St. Louis Chapter annually partners with schools in the St. Louis Metropolitan area, for participation in this exciting Block Kids program.
“The level of excitement and enthusiasm continues to build each year, and we feel that this is truly a sign that this program firmly impacts children,” Kita Haynes, President – NAWIC – St. Louis Chapter commented.
Founded in 1953, the National Association of Women in Construction is a not-for-profit organization designed to provide support, nurturing and business opportunities in the construction industry. The industry produces numerous programs throughout the year impacting the community in various sectors.
The unique feature of the event is that children are given blocks, paper and a string and are challenged with constructing structures related to the construction industry.
“It’s amazing to see the level of creativity from the students and what’s developed from a few materials…quite amazing,” Haynes reflected.
“We definitely want to plant the seeds for the future generation of construction workers by expanding the children’s interest and knowledge in the construction industry and we are once again excited to participate in the Block Kids program. It is always a pleasure to sit and talk with the children and to witness the cleaver ideas that they come up with,” said Dave Hartwig, interior finish manager – Duke Realty, a judge participating in the Block Kids program.
